Niyyat-E-Shauq Bhar Na Jaye Kahin

Nasir Kazmi · Famous renditions include Noor Jehan / Munni Begum · Urdu

REFRAIN · THE FEAR OF FORGETTING

Niyat-e-shauq bhar na jaye kahin

May my longing never grow tired or satisfied.

MeaningInstead of wishing to end yearning, the poet fears losing the ability to feel it. Desire itself has become precious and worth protecting.

Tu bhi dil se utar na jaye kahin

I hope you never lose your place in my heart.

MeaningThe fear is not simply separation. It is the quieter possibility that affection could fade with time, until someone once cherished becomes ordinary.

COUPLET 1 · AFTER A LONG WAIT

Aaj dekha hai tujh ko der ke baad

Today I saw you after such a long time.

MeaningA rare reunion makes an ordinary encounter extraordinary. Every small moment matters more because the speaker has waited so long.

Aaj ka din guzar na jaye kahin

I wish this day would never come to an end.

MeaningTime becomes the adversary: the poet cannot stop the day moving forward, so the wish expresses how intensely they want this meeting to last.

COUPLET 2 · SADNESS AND BEAUTY

Na mila kar udaas logon se

Don't spend too much time with sorrowful people.

MeaningA tender, perhaps teasing warning to the beloved. The speaker worries that sadness can rub off on someone whose beauty feels full of light.

Husn tera bikhar na jaye kahin

I'm afraid your beauty might lose its radiance.

MeaningBikharna literally evokes scattering or falling apart. Here it suggests that sadness could disturb the beloved's glow, not that beauty is merely physical.

COUPLET 3 · THE WISH TO STAY

Aarzu hai ke tum yahan aaye

My wish is that you would come here.

MeaningThe desire is direct and intimate: the beloved's arrival matters more than gifts or grand declarations.

Aur phir umr bhar na jaye kahin

And then never leave, for the rest of your life.

MeaningA brief visit grows into a wish for permanence. The exaggeration is poignant because it emerges from the experience of long absence.

COUPLET 4 · LET THE TEARS FLOW

Aao kuch der ro hi lein 'Nasir'

Come, Nasir, let's cry for a little while.

MeaningThe poet addresses himself by name and allows sadness to be expressed openly. Crying is offered as an honest, human response, not a failure.

Phir ye dariya utar na jaye kahin

Before this river of tears subsides.

MeaningTears are imagined as a river in flood. The striking idea is that even grief has a moment that may pass, so one must let the heart speak while it can.
